A septic alarm is a warning, not a decoration. When it sounds, liquid is too high, air is not moving, or a control circuit lost power. Ignoring it overnight is how a warning becomes sewage backing up into the house. Why septic systems have alarms

High-water alarm vs aerator alarm
High-water (high-level) alarm. A float, pressure transducer, or probe in the pump tank trips when effluent rises above the normal “on” level. Typical causes include a failed pump, a tripped breaker, a clogged effluent filter, a blocked discharge line, or a drain field that will not accept water. This is the alarm that most often precedes indoor backups.
Aerator (air pump / blower) alarm. On aerobic systems, a compressor keeps oxygen in the treatment tank. If the blower stops, a pressure switch or current sensor trips the alarm. Untreated sewage can still leave the tank for a while, but treatment quality collapses and odors rise. Some ATUs use one light for high water and another for air failure; others use a single light with flash patterns. Check the sticker inside the panel door.
If you are not sure which alarm you have, look at the tank lids. A pump chamber usually has a riser, a pump, and a float tree. An ATU has a blower housing, often above grade, with an air line into the tank.
What to do in the first hour
- Silence only after you identify the panel. Note whether the red light is steady or flashing, and whether the aerator is humming.
- Cut indoor water use. Pause laundry, dishwashers, long showers, and hose bibs. Every extra gallon raises the level in a failed pump tank.
- Check power. Confirm the house still has electricity. Open the septic control panel and see if the breaker is tripped. Reset once. If it trips again, stop. Repeated resets can burn a failing pump.
- Look and smell, do not dig. Check for wet spots, lush grass, or sewage odor over the drain field. Do not open lids without a proper puller; falling into a tank is a real hazard.
- Do not ignore it overnight. A high-water alarm can become a floor-drain overflow in hours if the house keeps using water.
If toilets gurgle, drains slow, or sewage appears in a tub, treat it as an indoor backup: stop water use, keep people and pets away, and call for emergency pumping.
Pump vs power vs float
Power. Storms, GFCI trips, a chewed cable, or a breaker switched off in the garage will set a high-water alarm after a few hours of normal use. If the pump runs when power is restored and the level drops, you may only need a panel check.
Pump. Pumps fail from age, grit, and running dry. A pump that hums but does not move water, or that trips the breaker immediately, needs replacement.
Floats and sensors. An “on” float can stick down (pump never runs) or stick up (pump runs continuously and may burn out). A high-level float can tangle on the discharge pipe and false-alarm, or hang up so it never alarms until the tank overflows. Float replacement is usually cheaper than a pump, but the tank still needs pumping for safe access.
Downstream blockage. If the pump runs and the level does not fall, the problem may be a clogged effluent filter, a crimped line, a closed valve, or a saturated drain field. Watch for signs the tank is full even after the pump has cycled: persistent wetness, sewage at the surface, and odors after rain.
Do not keep flushing “just to see.” Do not dump additives hoping the alarm will clear. Do not jumper the alarm float “until Monday.” Do not run a shop pump into a ditch. Those shortcuts spread contamination and can violate local health rules.

Can I shower if the alarm is on? Keep showers short and skip laundry. If it is a high-water alarm and the pump is dead, even a few showers can overflow the tank.
